A second unit (also called an additional residential unit, or ARU) is a self-contained dwelling inside or on the same lot as a house — often a basement apartment, or a garden suite. The city issues a building permit before that unit is legal to build.
Brampton's two-unit dwelling guide says second units are allowed in detached, semi-detached and townhouse dwellings subject to zoning, and that a legal second unit must be registered. The permit drawings must show heating supply outlets and return air grills, exhaust intakes, duct-type smoke detectors in the air-handling system, and the location of plumbing fixtures, along with fire separations and egress.

The City's mandatory inspection list for two-unit dwellings includes underground plumbing, drain-waste-vent rough-in, water distribution, HVAC rough-in, plumbing fixtures and appliances, and completion of the HVAC system before occupancy and final.
